Woman Critically Injured in Lion Attack at Queensland Zoo

(MENAFN) A woman was urgently airlifted to a hospital after suffering a lion bite at Darling Downs Zoo, located 110 kilometers southwest of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia.

Emergency responders were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday after reports surfaced that a woman in her 50s had been attacked by an animal at the zoo.

The victim, who works at the zoo, sustained a severe injury to her arm and was transported to a Brisbane medical facility in stable condition.

According to an Australian broadcasting agency, the incident involved a lion, and tragically, the woman lost an arm.

In a social media statement released Sunday afternoon, the zoo explained that the woman was observing zookeepers within the carnivore area when the lion grabbed her arm.

The zoo emphasized that the animal never left its enclosure, ensuring there was no threat to visitors or the public.

The facility confirmed that the lion will not face euthanasia or any form of punishment following the attack.

"Police and Workplace Health and Safety personnel are investigating this incident and have been onsite all morning. The zoo is working with them to establish how this incident occurred," the statement read.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this June, Darling Downs Zoo is home to various big cats, including tigers, leopards, and lions.
